WE CARE FAMILY

The We Care Family marks its 41st anniversary with a renewed commitment to compassion and service, honoring more than four decades of caring for abandoned seniors at GRACES Home for the Elderly. What began as a simple act of kindness has grown into a sustained mission of love—one that has given dignity, hope, and a sense of family to those who were once left behind.

For the residents of GRACES, We Care Family has become more than a support group; it is a constant presence. Through regular visits, shared meals, medical assistance, and quiet conversations, volunteers offer not just help, but genuine human connection. Each gesture, no matter how small, affirms that every senior’s life still holds value and meaning.

The 41st anniversary is both a celebration and a reflection. It honors the founders, volunteers, and partners who have kept the mission alive through the years, often working quietly behind the scenes. Their dedication proves that compassion, when sustained over time, can transform lives and create a lasting impact on the most vulnerable.

As We Care Family looks ahead, the commitment remains clear: to continue serving abandoned seniors with respect, patience, and love. The journey of the past 41 years stands as a powerful reminder that caring for the elderly is not just a responsibility, but a shared human duty—one that We Care Family will continue to uphold for generations to come.

PH's Biggest Travel Expo for 2026

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) is bringing back the Travel Tour Expo (TTE) 2026, the country’s biggest travel and tourism event, happening from February 6 to 8, 2026 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Recognized as the Philippines’ premier tourism marketplace, TTE 2026 will feature nearly 800 PTAA-accredited exhibitors showcasing destinations across six continents. Visitors can expect exclusive expo-only travel deals, including discounted airfares and special hotel and tour packages—all under one roof.

Tourism remains a major pillar of the Philippine economy, contributing PHP 2.35 trillion in 2024, or 8.9 percent of GDP, while generating jobs for 6.75 million Filipinos.

“Travel is more than leisure—it stimulates economic growth and reflects the Filipino passion for discovery,” said PTAA President Jaison P. Yang. “Through TTE 2026, we aim to make travel more accessible and affordable for more Filipinos.”

The three-day expo will occupy two full floors and feature over 800 local and international exhibitors, live performances, raffles, travel talks, and family-friendly activities. Complimentary admission is offered, with early-entry privileges extended to BPI cardholders.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), established in 1851 and the country’s oldest bank, returns as a major sponsor and partner of the event.

Running alongside TTE is the International Travel Trade Expo (iTTE), a business-to-business platform that connects Philippine travel agencies with international tourism stakeholders.

TTE 2026 is supported by key partners including the Department of Tourism (DOT), Tourism Promotions Board, Kaban Hotel & Casino Boracay, PLDT Enterprise, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), and Duty Free Philippines.

Since its launch in 1993, the Travel Tour Expo has consistently attracted more than 100,000 attendees annually, reinforcing its reputation as the most anticipated travel expo in the country.

Jeproks the musical

 JEPROKS

The decade of the 1970s was lived under the shadow of martial law. Some artists and writers went underground, and the crony press materialized in the form of the Daily Express, Bulletin Today, and Times Journal.

Pinoy folk and Pinoy rock came of age at this time, with the protest song “Bayan Ko” sung during Masses and in folkhouses, along with Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” and the nationalistic songs of the bands Asin and Heber Bartolome’s Banyuhay.

The mid-1970s saw Ryan Cayabyab’s “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” winning the top prize in the First Metropop Music Festival, edging out Freddie Aguilar’s “Anak.” It was the latter song, though, that became a breakout international hit.

A rock singer-guitarist from Leyte, Mike Hanopol, also burst into the musical scene with his signature song “Laki sa Layaw (Jeprox).”

The ditty became some kind of anthem, however negative, for the youths of that era, the survivors of whom are now in their 70s or 80s.

Cool, laid-back

A “jeprox” was a cool, laid-back young man, street-smart and easygoing, and born to middle-class comfort. Something of a spoiled brat, he cultivated vices, drank, was lazy, and made a general nuisance of himself. What he wanted was always given to him, and yet he remained unsatisfied.

Hanopol succinctly captured this sense of juvenile drift in “Laki sa Layaw’s” lyrics: “Lahat ng gusto niya, ibinigay na sa kanya, ngunit wala pa rin siyang kasiyahan” (Everything was given to him, yet he was still unhappy).

Musical play

Comes now “Jeprox the Musical,” a play inspired by the songs of Hanopol and starring David Ezra as the rocker-songwriter (Miko to his family); Jett Pangan as Tatay Paking, the father; Geneva Cruz as Mike’s mother Liwayway, who dies early in the story but whose presence is felt even after her demise; Jeffrey Alejandro and Nino Alejandro as band members Willie and Paulo, respectively; and Sheila Ferrer as Paz, the love interest.

This new Filipino musical play is directed by Frannie Zamora and written by Nick Pichay, with Jed Balsamo as musical director.

“The very good script by Nick is not predictable. The music is the most integral part of the production and we have a live eight-piece band. I want to make it [the show] as realistic as possible,” said Zamora in a recent interview.

The story traces the main character’s differences with his father, “a conservative man who did not believe in concerts, and this causes tension between him and Miko,” said Pangan. “All of this is presented with the music of Mike Hanopol, but it is not his life story. It’s about the struggle of living in an uncertain time; you don’t know what will happen.”

Added Pangan, “The theme is very universal and the music is important. The relevance of the song (‘Laki sa Layaw: Jeprox’) has never left us from the time it came out, and I think it’s even more relevant today. It is a message of hope.”

A production of Tanghalang Una Obra, “Jeprox the Musical” runs till Nov. 30 at GSIS Theater, CCP Complex.

Fisher Mall's Christmas Launch

Hope Shines Bright at Fisher Mall’s Christmas Celebration for Cancer Patients

Christmas shone brighter this year at Fisher Mall as its Quezon Avenue and Malabon branches launched “A Holiday of Hope,” a festive tree-lighting celebration dedicated to community and compassion. Families, shoppers, partners, and local officials came together to welcome the season and support a meaningful cause. “Fisher Mall has always believed in creating spaces where people feel connected,” said Raymond Del Rosario, President of the Fisher Mall Group of Companies.

The celebration showcased the best of local talent, featuring performances by the Quezon City Symphonic Band, the Malabon Concert Singers, and Ballet Manila. Guests also enjoyed interactive activities and a charming Christmas-themed LEGO display by the PinoyLUG community led by Leslie Araujo, bringing joy and nostalgia to both kids and adults. The presence of Quezon City officials further highlighted the shared commitment to culture, creativity, and community engagement.

Del Rosario emphasized that Fisher Mall’s activity centers serve as open platforms for performers, cultural groups, and local organizations. By giving communities a space to gather and express themselves, the mall continues to strengthen collaboration with local government units and expand opportunities for shared experiences.

Beyond the festivities, Fisher Mall turned holiday traditions into acts of giving. Through the Fisher Elite Card, a portion of every card sold until December 31, 2025, at the Fisher Mall Supermarket and Fisher Department Store will help sustain Bahay Aruga – A Free Halfway House for Cancer Patients. This initiative reflects the mall’s mission to celebrate the season with purpose and extend hope to those who need it most. - Teddy Pelaez
